Meditation is a mental discipline by which one attempts to get beyond the reflexive, "thinking" mind into a deeper state of relaxation or awareness. Meditation often involves turning attention to a single point of reference. It is a component of many religions, and has been practiced since antiquity. It is also practiced outside religious traditions. Different meditative disciplines encompass a wide range of spiritual or psychophysical practices that may emphasize different goals—from achievement of a higher state of consciousness, to greater focus, creativity or self-awareness, or simply a more relaxed and peaceful frame of mind.

The word meditation comes from the Indo-European root med-, meaning "to measure." It entered English as meditation through the Latin meditatio, which originally indicated any type of physical or intellectual exercise, then later evolved into the more specific meaning "contemplation."

Eastern meditation techniques have been adapted and increasingly practiced in Western culture. It can often be associated with other practices such as yoga or pilates, which relax both the mind and body.

Q. I am doing a project and I would like to know what happens in basic a buddhist meditation?

A. There are many different Buddhist traditions and each tradition teaches meditation in its own way, with its own unique emphasis. That said, most Buddhist meditation techniques bring the practitioner into awareness of what is actually happening in the mind from moment to moment. Some traditions ask practitioners to follow or count the breath (inhalations and exhalations). This helps calm the mind so that the practitioner can see thoughts arise and fall away. Other traditions ask students to label or name the contents of the mind ("thinking of dinner" "back pain" "worrying about email"). Again, this helps the student see how the mind takes us away from attention to the moment. Other traditions use imagery of people, objects, events, or… [cont.]

Q. What is the similarities and differences between hypnosis, meditation and biofeedback. Why do so many people find them so helpful? In what way do you think they might relate to our universal love of music?

A. Meditation: process with the goal of achieving stillness of mind. Hypnosis: process with the goal of achieving a state of heightened focus. Biofeedback: used to develop awareness and control of mind and body connection typically through the use of an electronic aid. All are quite similar as they are commonly used for stress management. Yet the method of each is quite distinctly different.
