Sangha (Pali: saṅgha; Sanskrit: संघ saṃgha; Wylie: 'dus sde) is a word in Pali or Sanskrit that can be translated roughly as "association" or "assembly," "company" or "community" with common goal, vision or purpose. It is commonly used in several senses to refer to Buddhist or Jain groups. Traditionally, in Buddhism Sangha almost always has one of two meanings: most commonly, Sangha means the monastic Sangha of ordained Buddhist monks or nuns. In a stricter sense, Sangha can mean the assembly of all beings possessing some high degree of realization, referred to as the arya-sangha or "noble Sangha". This article deals primarily with the subject of the monastic Sangha. Buddhists traditionally consider monastic life to provide the environment most conducive to advancing toward enlightenment, and the Sangha is responsible for maintaining, translating, advancing, and spreading the teachings of the Buddha. According to the same tradition for a country or nation to be considered as truly Buddhist, the majority of the nation must be Buddhist and include at least a fourfold sangha of bhikkhus, bhikkhunis, upasakas and, upasikas. That is why there is also a tradition of yogic tantric practitioners who are laypeople but still Buddhist practitioners.

A. It depends on which type of monastery they dwell in. Some monks may live in a community and some monks live in solitary. Most monks congregate only on important events like Magha Puja and Visakha Puja, on the eve of the Vassa retreats, Kathina and so forth. Usually monks begin their day by waking up at 4.30am and do their necessary clean up, baths, morning puja, meditations etc. Then they'll usually go for their almsround at early sunrise (say, 6.45-7.00am) to nearby inhabited aread for collection of offerings. Basically a monk will collect enough food and requisites for the day and return before 8.00am and have their morning meals. After meal, it would depend if the particular monk/community of monks who are either in a meditation… [cont.]

Are there any famous Buddhist newspapers or journalists? Also any Buddhist philanthropists or benefactors?
Q. Thanks, doing an article about the Buddhist scene and how members of the Sangha can tune in to certain newspapers or magazines for the community and if there are any Buddhist philanthropists that support Buddhist causes and promotion of Buddhist culture. Thanks.

Does the Holy Trinity of today's church folks actually come from Buddhism?
Q. Is it true that Buddhism (which has existed long before Christianity) had Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, which were the Father, Son and Piety? If so, how did it get from Buddhism to Christianity? I thought Christianity is mostly a product of Judaism and Paganism. Replies from religion scholars and others appreciated. .

A. Not at all. The Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha of Buddhism, also known as The Three Jewels and The Three Refuges, are not the same as the Father, Son, Spirit trinity of Christianity. Buddhists take refuge in the Three Jewels as an affirmation of their trust in them as guides on their path. The Buddha refers to both the historical person who attained enlightenment and also the enlightened principle in all of us. The Dharma refers to both the teachings expounded by the Buddha as well as the principles and laws governing reality. The sangha refers to both the community of monastics and lay-people who identify as Buddhists and also to those individuals, lay or ordained, who have awakened to the truth in their lives. The Buddhist trinity may… [cont.]
